"The image is my medium; movement the language through which I speak."
Theresa Maria Forthaus works as a photographer and interdisciplinary artist oscillating between visual and performing arts. With the human body at the centre of her practice, her work blurs the line between documentary and fiction. Drawing from an embodied understanding of rhythm, voice and dance, Theresa explores the body as archive, as medium, and as social space.
In 2019, Theresa graduated from AKI ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design in Enschede (NL). During her semester abroad at the University of the Arts London (UK), her photographs were published and digitally exhibited, amongst others at the Hayward Gallery and the Tate Modern in London. She was awarded the New Dutch Photography Talent Award by GUP Magazine. Her video works were shown amongst others at Art Biesenthal, independent film festivals or in collaboration with performances at Uferstudios Berlin.
Alongside her current project photo and video project “Speaking Without Words”, which will be presented as part of the BFF Förderpreis exhibition at Willy-Brandt-Haus Berlin and at Fotofestival 'horizonte zingst' 2026, she is currently developing a video piece set to premiere at the Süreyya Opera House during the 54th Istanbul Music Festival in June 2026, in collaboration with musician Kaan Bulak, opera singer Sarah Aristidou and dancer Amanda Donato.
