Nothingness

2021 | video | 5:20min

in collaboration with Katharina Scheidtmann [dance] and Leonhard van Voorst [music]

With the social and psychological consequences that occur due to the unprecedented global pandemic, subjects such as self-care and healing gain enormously in importance. Overworked bodies in our society strive for a healthier balance of mind and body. Hence, a trend wave of mindfulness practices has swept across Europe in recent years. A whole industry arose around the notion of ‘self-care’, making billions of profit by impelling the individual to relax. Thus, if this ‘trendy’ mindfulness is enveloped by the self-optimisational spirit of a neoliberal society, (how) can mindfulness practices nevertheless be a way to facilitate the search for personal authenticity that entails the freedom of a balanced self?

Against this backdrop, the video piece ‘Nothingness’ examines the topics of perception and body awareness through the practice of meditation and dance. Between distraction, concentration and the freedom of letting go, the piece explores different states of mind one can pass through while meditating.
